He slid to the middle of the bench seat and pulled her astride his hips. He lowered her mouth to his
and kissed her so hard it almost hurt. Her hands continued to explore his chest, teasing his nipples the
way he liked, and molding to each contour of male muscle.
He tugged one thin strap from her shoulder, then lowered the bodice of her dress just far enough to
expose one breast. For one long moment he only stared at the small, pale globe, his breathing so harsh
the sound made her ache in a way she d never known before. When his mouth closed over her breast,
she screamed her pleasure. His hips rose from the seat, thrusting against her. She pushed down,
reveling in the hard feel of him against the place that ached so for his touch.
Then he suddenly stopped. She moaned her displeasure. She didn t want him to stop.
I can t do this. His words were barely audible above his ragged breathing.
Please don t stop. She kissed his lips in hopes of changing his mind, at the same time pressing down
against him. He groaned.
Wait. He held her away from him and looked at her in the darkness. She could just make out his eyes,
the grim set of his mouth. We can t.
I don t understand. She shook her head. Don t you want me?
Oh, yes. He gently lifted her off him and settled her on the seat beside him. But we can t do this.
He shook his head. It wouldn t be right for either of us.
She dropped her head back against the seat. I can t believe this.
He slid behind the wheel once more and started the engine. Neither can I.
He drove her home without another word.
Chapter Nine
By the time Ty parked in front of her house Leanne was feeling more than a little embarrassed. What in
the world had possessed her to behave so foolishly? Ty probably thought she d lost her mind. She stole
a glance at him. But he d been a little out of control, too. She closed her eyes and shook her head. The
truth was she d pushed him into it. What man wouldn t react willingly with a woman practically taking
advantage of him? She thought of that muscled, masculine frame, then of her own size and decided
maybe taking advantage was a bit of an overstatement.
She d just wanted this one night.
Just to see. To get this crazy thing settled once and for all. Then things could return to normal, she felt
sure.
Without looking at her, Ty got out of the truck and walked around to her door to see her out. When he
opened it, she looked at him in the dim glow cast by the cab light. She saw the same confusion she felt
and something else& regret?
Her heart sank, adding insult to injury. She slipped off the seat to stand directly in front of him. To her
surprise he made no move to back away. He just waited. For her to say something, she supposed.
I m sorry, she said in a braver tone than she d thought possible. I don t know what came over me.
She trembled but quickly crossed her arms over her chest to conceal the quaking.
He touched her cheek, those long fingers trailed along her jawline, making her shiver, before he
dropped his hand back to his side. You have nothing to be sorry for, he assured her, his voice as soft
and gentle as his touch. We both got a little carried away tonight. He smiled; her heart reacted. The
pressure has been on both of us and maybe we just needed to see what all the fuss was about.
He didn t sound convinced but his effort to make her feel better touched her. Thanks, Ty. She peered
up at him, once more amazed at how she could have known him all this time and not realized just how
wonderful he was. You re a good sport and I m& She shrugged. I think I m just confused.
Let s forget about it, okay? He ushered her away from the truck door so that he could close it, then
toward her porch steps, his palm never leaving the small of her back.
Forget it. That was the way he handled everything lately. A jab of anger made her want to stop right
there and tell him what she thought. It sure hadn t felt like he wanted to forget it when they were
kissing. He d been very aroused. She might not have any experience with men, but she knew when one
was aroused. She d read her share of romance novels and watched enough romantic movies. And now
he wanted to act as if it had been nothing. This whole situation bordered on the ridiculous. All this time
they d been friends, now suddenly everything was spiraling out of control, and he wanted to pretend it
all away.
Why couldn t she do the same? That was the truly frustrating part.
Leanne squared her shoulders and lifted her chin in defiance of her own doubts. Whatever was going
on with her foolish heart, she d get over it. Ty was right, they should simply forget the whole thing.
At her door, she turned back to him, head held high. Good night, Ty. Thank you for taking me to the
dance.
He moistened those full lips, causing a little hitch in her breathing. She swore silently. He appeared
more uncertain now of what had happened than she did. He quickly, awkwardly pressed a chaste kiss
to her cheek, lingering just long enough for her to be assaulted all over again by that tantalizing
masculine scent.
Good night, he murmured.
Leanne turned away from him, gave the doorknob a frantic twist and rushed into her living room. The
urge to cry was nearly overwhelming. This was insane! Her emotions were on a roller-coaster ride. One
minute she wanted to push him away, the next
Leanne?
The weak sound of her mother s voice came from somewhere in the dark living room. Mom?
I can t seem to get up.
Panic shot through Leanne. She felt for the light switch and snapped it on. Her mother lay in a
crumpled heap on the floor, struggling hard to raise herself to a sitting position. Mom! Leanne
rushed to her side. Are you hurt? Fear made her heart pound. She should have been at home
tonight, not out misbehaving as she had. Guilt and worry swamped her. She should never have left her
mother at home alone for so long.
Is everything all right?
When Leanne looked up Ty was striding into the room, concern marring his handsome face. He
crouched next to her. What happened?
She fell. Help me get her to her bed.
As Leanne tried to help her mother up, he halted her with a firm hand on her shoulder. Wait. We can t
